History

Newman is located about 1200km north of Perth and is the largest town in the Shire of East Pilbara. Newman was built by the Mt Newman Mining Company between 1967 and 1969, after Stan Hilditch - a prospector - discovered large iron-ore deposits within the area.

During the mid-70's, more than 60,000 trees were planted within the Newman area to help beautify and provide shade to the townsite. The town was run under the name Mt Newman until 1981 when the mining company passed ownership over to the Shire of East Pilbara.

South Newman Primary School was established in 1976 and enrolled 175 students in its first year under the guidance of Mr R McLeod.

The population grew rapidly in the following years with 320 enrolled in 1977 and 500 in 1978. We currently have around 500 students enrolled from Kindergarten through to Year Seven. With the current resource boom in Western Australia continued growth is assured.
